my favorite quotations:.
you cannot change what you refuse to confront.. sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.. don’t think of cost.

it has been 21 years since the 1995 article that pretty much buried the idea of the '1914 generation'.. remember those guys?
the ones born in 1914 that would still be alive when the end of the system arrived.. i'm glad i'm old enough to remember going from door to door, preaching this belief.
the reason i say that is because i have a lot of 'still in' jw friends and family.
Honest
'I was told by my young jw nephew that the society never said that the generation that saw 1914 will not pass away. Then I looked at him and said dude you weren't born yet and that was most certainly the Teaching and to go home and ask his parents. he never brang it up again. '
Honest, this is exactly what disturbs me about all this.
Just like 1975, how long before no one will remember, or admit to remembering, the original understanding of the 1914 generation?
Whenever you claim to represent God and publish teachings in his name, preach these teachings to the world as truth, then change them, that's called blasphemy, presumptuousness and bringing reproach to God's name.

I'm glad I'm old enough to remember going from door to door, preaching this belief. The reason I say that is because I have a lot of 'still in' JW friends and family. The 'kids' I grew up with 'in the truth' now have adult children of their own. Yet, I realised that any 'born in' dub would have to be at least 26- 30 years old to even vaguely remember preaching about the 'original generation' of 1914.
That means that the children of my friends that I used to go door to door with have no memory of the 'single generation' 1914 teaching. As far as I know, the jw.org website only has publications going back as far as 2000, so researching it through official channels presents a problem, unless they come to websites like this one.
Theres something about this that really bothers me. Like the original belief that Armageddon will start in 1914- which was then changed when it didn't happen, the society's survival seems to rely on older ones dying off along with their memories of what they were taught and preached as truth. Once the old generation are gone (along with their inconvenient memories), its time to roll out the next change of doctrine.
I doubt there has ever been so much rapid change in the organisation. I can't help but think its just all sizzle to disguise the fact that there is no steak anymore.
i saw a 'news' article today about pizza hut (i think) delivering pizzas via a robotic vehicle in nz.
also another article headline saying it is not a question of if, but when.
my immediate thought was, why?
Worldwide, car accidents kill a person every 25 secs. That's about 1.25 million a year. How many more are maimed or crippled?
Removing the human factor would no doubt make a big difference.
Human factor: ego, temper, tiredness, distraction, carelessness, speed, drugs, alcohol, inexperience and stupidity to name a few.
as a born-in jw, i never considered myself to be a fundamentalist.
i always thought we were enlightened, progressive and not 'stuck in darkness' like all the other religions.. i was totally wrong.. as far as fundamentalists go, jw's are probably right up there amongst the front-runners.
no, they do not stone people to death or go on religion-fuelled violent rampages but that's not what i'm talking about.

A fundamentalist believes the book they consider sacred as fact, in its entirety. As we know, JW's believe the bible to be infallible. They believe everything that is written in it actually happened and look to the bible (combined with their own interpretation) as the final word in any argument, be it scientific, moral, prophetic, whatever.
Why is this so dangerous?
It negates logic and reason. A fundamentalist is by definition an unreasonable, dogmatic person. He does not care about peer reviewed scientific discoveries if they disprove what he believes in, he regards them as joke. I have heard JW's mock excellent, caring medical doctors because they advocate using blood when needed in life-saving surgeries. Others may have 'read an article or two' about bloodless surgery and now feel qualified to judge these medical staff that have devoted most of their lives so far learning to save lives. This all comes about because of an unclear scripture in the old testament. This is just one example.
As JW's, everything we do, say and think is governed by someone else, we don't get to think for ourselves. We choose life paths for ourselves and our children based on this information.
All a fundamentalist has to do is believe the bible. That's it, case closed, argument over. If you disagree then you are an apostate. A scientist however does not have that luxury. he cannot just proclaim something to be true and expect everyone else to agree. Anything a researcher does is peer reviewed, challenged, debated in a search for the truth. A scientist must go where the evidence leads them, this is rational and logical.
I haven't been to a meeting in about 10 yrs. As a baptised dub, I really thought I knew a lot about the bible but over the last 10 years I have learned the most interesting stuff and I guess that is the point I am coming to.
Fundamentalists, like JW's, base their whole lives and those of their children on the bible because they assume it to be true but how much do we know about the bible? Here's some fun stuff I really want to share. Some of this has no doubt been covered on this website but some people may not have come across it yet. This is not a comprehensive list but hopefully it will be of interest to anyone who has just started searching for truth.
Jesus was not born of a virgin. Isa 7:14,the scripture that 'foretells' his birth of a virgin has nothing to do with Jesus. The word 'virgin' in Hebrew was mistranslated into greek and originally meant 'the young woman of marriageable age'. It applied to a young woman that was standing in the presence of the King Ahaz when Isaiah spoke the prophecy. She would give birth to a child named Immanuel that will still be young when the threat from the enemy kings had passed.
There is no archaeological evidence for Moses, Abraham, Isaac outside the bible.
There is no evidence outside the bible that there was an exodus of the Jews from Egypt.
There is little to no archaeological or historical evidence for David or Solomon living in the 10th century BCE.
How long is a creative day? I don't know and neither do the governing body, although it didn't stop them from telling us to preach that it was 7000 years to the whole world for decades. This has implications for end times prophecy and its what led to the 1975 debacle.
I wasn't going to mention Noahs flood but needless to say there is absolutely no geological evidence it happened. There is no physical evidence it happened. The ark has never been found. This is a topic that has its own threads on this website.
This is the tip of the iceberg. The point I am trying to make is that as dub, I swallowed all this without thought and because I was a fundamentalist, I looked down on anyone that didn't agree with me.
i would like to better understand what richard dawkins is saying and would appreciate your help, views and opinions, including the implications:.
"far from being demeaning to human spiritual values, scientific rationalism is the crowning glory of the human spirit.
".
Rationalism is the exact opposite of religious fundamentalism.
What has more merit? To blindly believe something just because your parents do, without question, or to take the time and effort to research the beliefs that you have been told to live your life by.
From the interviews and discussions of Dawkins I have seen , one message I take from him is that 'living a good life is its own reward'.
Much of religion has at its root a fear of dying and the promise that it is possible to cheat death by living according to certain principles. Only your group know the secret to eternal life and only your group have gods favour.
From my experience, fundamentalism seems to be inversely proportional to reasoning ability. So, if a person can cast off generations of traditions and rituals, actually THINK for themselves and base their conclusions on verifiable evidence and then continue to live a good decent life, showing love and respect for their fellow man because they want to, not because they have to, and see the reason and logic for doing so, that, to me speaks well of what man can accomplish.
The alternative is to be a drone, passing your drone blueprint to your offspring ad nauseam.
i was hosing the garden at the front of our apartments earlier this morning, and this large gang (20-30 people) of elderly chinese went past, picking up rubbish in the street.
it suddenly clicked that this was 'clean-up australia' day.
what interested me was the involvement of this group of elderly chinese, and i assume that this is likely happening across sydney in all the many suburbs that have become 'chinese' in the last 35 years.
There's a possibility that many Aussies look at chinese as new arrivals in Australia when the exact opposite is the case.
Many Chinese families can trace their heritage back to the day's of the Australian gold rushes which means they were here long before many European families.
There are over 1 billion chinese living in china and who knows how many spread throughout the world. If, on average, every 6th person on the planet is Chinese, it's not overly surprising to see a person of Chinese extraction walking around somewhere.
Even small country towns in Australia have their chinese restaurants owned by generations of the same family.
In general, they seem to be hard working and respectful.
as you may know, this makes me very happy.
ban on religious circumcision.
relate to a ban in all probability will not stop the millennium old core tradition in many parts of islam and especially judaism.
Son of the trinity.
I don't think anyone is suggesting a circumcised man is a 'lesser ' man.
The point is that you and millions of others have been subjected to a questionable medical procedure without your consent.
If you became an adult and had never been circumcised and everything was physically ok with your foreskin, would you request a pointless procedure to have it removed?
the topic of circumcision has been brought up a few times recently.
then i wondered... .
how do women really view circumcision?
I have heard comments justifying the procedure like these:
We wanted our son to look like his dad down there, or,
We think circumcision 'looks' better.
Ok......, now what about these comments:
I think stretching the neck and lips of a young African girl makes her 'look' more attractive.
I think Chinese baby girls should have their feet bound because it makes them more feminine.
Female circumcision is ok because it will make a girl 'smell sweeter' for her husband.
Withholding life saving medical procedures (like blood transfusions) from our child is ok because that's what we believe.
Unless circumcision is done for a valid medical reason, it is just parents forcing their beliefs or traditions on their children
only a few days ago i was walking around the house in a mindless wander thinking if i needed to seek professional help.
then i got the courage to seek the comfort of complete strangers on the internet and found a world of support here on this website.
thank you simon and whoever else has made this website possible.
Hi elderess,
Thanks for sharing your story, I admit I had tears in my eyes as I was reading it and I can only imagine the weight that came off your shoulders as you and your husband poured your hearts out to each other.
May I give a word of warning in regards to your kids? I don't know if you grew up as a JW or came to it in later years but be prepared for your kid(s) to resent you for turning your backs on the religion you raised them in.
From a child's point of view, you usually believe everything your parents tell you and they may view you as hypocritical for raising them as jw's, possibly missing out on a lot of things other kids took for granted, only to see you do the exact opposite of what you taught them, when it suited you to leave.
And then, there's the whole brainwashing - 'OH-MY-GOODNESS-YOU-DONT-BELIEVE-IN-THE-TRUTH-ANYMORE-AND-ARE-BAD' thing.
Thanks again for sharing and all the best for the future.
